Arthur Bernhardt. When Arthur Bernhardt joined the Luftwaffe he had no idea that he would ever participate in one of the largest tank battles in World War II – from the ground – but that is exactly what happened. Born in Leipzig on August 18, 1918, Arthur had previously served in the Luftwaffe until March 1943; he had no previous combat experience in a tank prior to Kursk. SS-Unterscharführer Bernhardt was assigned to the First Platoon, serving as the commander of Tiger 1312 from July 5 to July 12. On the latter date in the late morning, on the forward slope of Hill 241.6 enemy tank fire from the 181st Tank Brigade struck the Tiger numerous times including the cupola, killing Arthur Bernhardt instantly. His remains have never been found. (Waffen-SS Tiger Crews at Kursk: The Men of SS Panzer Regiments 1, 2 & 3 in Operation Citadel, July 5-15, 1943)
