This Date in History: August 25

 

First Sergeant John Ryan, Company M, 7th Cavalry was born in West Newton, Massachusetts on August 25, 1845.  At the Little Bighorn in 1876 his actions played a great roll in the survival of Company M at the battle that later became known as Custer’s Last Stand. Karl Bodenschatz, Luftwaffe General of Flyers, born December 10, 1890 in Rehau/Oberfranken, Bavaria, liaison officer between the Commander-in-Chief of the Luftwaffe and the Führer, winner of the German Cross in Silver, severely wounded in the July 20, 1944 assassination attempt against Adolf Hitler, died on August 25, 1979 in Erlangen, made the following comment on Poland in May 1939: “The Poles think they can be insolent and arrogant toward Germany because they are relying upon the backing of France and Britain, and that, in the event of war, they will have material support from Russia.  They are fooling themselves.”  (2,000 Quotes From Hitler’s 1,000-Year Reich)
