North of Stalingrad, on December 29, 1942, the 16th Panzer Division defended in sector along Hill 139.7-Hill 145.1-Hill 147.6 against the 116th Rifle Division, the 299th Rifle Division and the 64th Rifle Division. The division received harassing artillery and mortar fire across its entire front. The 99th Rifle Division attacked the right flank of the division, but was repulsed. To the west was the 60th Infantry Division (Motorized); to the east was the 24th Panzer Division. The division suffered ten NCOs/enlisted killed in action; 12 NCOs/enlisted were wounded in action; 44 men were reported missing in action, four men became frostbite casualties.
