Chicago Crime Calendar

On March 19, 1943, facing extended incarceration for the extortion of Hollywood film studios and being claustrophobic, Chicago Outfit front boss Frank Nitti, born Francesco Raffaele Nitto, got drunk and publicly committed suicide on an Illinois Central railroad track, in North Riverside,  blocks from his home.  Using a .32 revolver, the first shot fired by Nitti’s unsteady hand missed and passed through his fedora.  The second bullet penetrated into the right side of his jaw and exited through the top of his head.  The third, and fatal bullet, entered behind Nitti’s right ear and lodged in the top of his skull.
