This operation would result in the killing of 30 partisans and the “cleansing” of the village of Kossino in White Russia. On March 21, 1928, Joseph “Diamond Joe” Esposito, a Ward Republican committeeman, best known for his involvement in bootlegging, extortion, prostitution, and labor racketeering, was hit by five shotgun loads and killed in a drive-by shooting on his front steps. He was well known for his extravagant clothing and flashy jewelry and was wearing a $5000 diamond ring and his trademark “J.E.” diamond belt buckle when he was gunned down. His killers were never found.
