Pompey’s Pillar

On Monday, March 9, 1874 at Baker’s Road sunrise occurred at 6:38 a.m.  The weather began with clouds, but the sun soon dispersed them. Even so, the temperature remained cool.  The expedition traveled ten to twelve miles to the northeast along Baker’s Road toward Stanley’s Road in the general direction of Pompey’s Pillar, before halting in the afternoon and establishing a laager for the night.  Designated hunters killed a number of bison for supper.  Sunset was at 6:12 p.m.  (Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Gold and Guns: The 1874 Yellowstone Wagon Road and Prospecting Expedition and the Battle of Lodge Grass Creek)
