On November 11, 1944, the chain of command recommended Rudolf Böhlein for accelerated promotion to captain. Rudolf Böhmler, his commander, wrote the following:
“First Lieutenant Boehlein is above average in his general education and military knowledge. Physically, he is trained in many sport disciplines; he has endurance and is tough. Boehlein possesses a great amount of energy. As to his character, First Lieutenant Boehlein is an open, true and uncomplicated person, who loves truth and has an expressed feeling for justice. His outer appearance presents a hard, good soldierly image. First Lieutenant Boehlein has the nature of a leader, whom the soldiers willingly follow; he is able to create enthusiasm and is up-lifting. First Lieutenant Boehlein is the typical paratrooper officer. His attitude towards National Socialism is well-rooted and convincing. Due to his many operational experiences, he is well-versed in service knowledge and accomplishments. Talented as instructor.” (Luftwaffe Efficiency and Promotion Reports for the Knight’s Cross Winners)
