24th Panzer Division advancing

At Stalingrad on September 8, 1942, the 24th Panzer Division attacked east in zone through the Sadovaia Rail Station and seized the Leather Factory – crushing the 244th Rifle Division in the process.  To the north was the 71st Infantry Division; to the south was the 14th Panzer Division.  The division suffered one officer and 36 NCOs/enlisted killed in action; eight officers and 163 NCOs/enlisted were wounded in action; four men later died of their wounds.  The division commander, Generalmajor Bruno Ritter von Hauenschild was seriously wounded by mortar fire.  (Stalingrad: The Death of the German Sixth Army on the Volga, 1942-1943)

Hermann Göring; he cheated hangman Master Sergeant John C. Woods by committing suicide hours before his execution

On September 8, 1921 the District Court of Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas issued divorce papers for Lee Roy Woods and Mattie Wootrus.  As part of the decree, Clarence E. Woods, Lee Roy’s father, was awarded sole custody of John C. Woods, just ten, and he moved in with his grandparents at 1837 South Main.  (American Hangman: MSgt. John C.
