On March 29, 1941, the U-107 left Lorient under the command of Günter Hessler; on this endeavor Günter Hessler would sink fourteen ships while on patrol off the Canary Islands and lurking west of Freetown, Sierra Leone, Africa in the South Atlantic. Eight of these ships were in convoy: one from convoy OB-309, one from convoy OB-318, one from convoy OB-320, one from convoy OB-323 and four from convoy OG-57. The U-107 returned to Lorient on July 2, 1941 to a heroes’ welcome after ninety-six days at sea during which the U-boat traveled 15,744 sea-miles on the surface and 173 sea-miles submerged.
